| "Low mortality from cardiovascular disease among Greenland Eskimos was
described almost 20 years ago. This low incidence of heart disease has been attributed to
their diet, which is rich in fish fatty acids (omega-3 fatty acids). Many studies have now
documented the beneficial effects of fish oil containing such fatty acids on
atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease and certain other disease states.
A number of studies which have attracted much attention concerning the important
effects of fish oil have been carried out by Professor Tom Saldeen and his associates at
the University of Uppsala. This book is a compilation and brief overview of these studies.
While ordinary fish oil preparations may carry a risk from products of oxidation
reactions, the natural fish oil described here has been combined with appropriate
antioxidant species, resulting in a stable preparation with more pronounced effects in
humans. The introduction of stable fish oil is a significant advance.
I know this book will be an important resource to persons who consider supplementation
with fish oil for prevention or treatment of cardiovascular disease or other conditions.
Physicians and other health care employees who may wish to consider using fish oil in
patients with cardiovascular disease or other conditions should also benefit considerably
from reading this book."

"Twenty years ago Danish physicians published observations from Greenland that
Eskimos very seldom suffer from cardiovascular diseases. This was shown to be due to their
diet which is rich in fish fatty acids, so called omega-3 fatty acids. The author of this
book is a professor with special interest in cardiovascular diseases. He has put together
the results from the extensive research he and his colleagues have performed. In this book
is shown how the fish fatty acids in the cell walls produces local hormones, eicosanoids,
which have favourable effects on several bodily functions. The composition of the blood
lipids is changed and the concentration of fibrinogen in the blood decreases which
decreases the risk of atherosclerosis in the arteries of the heart, angina pectoris,
irregular heart beats and myocardial infarction.
Other studies have shown that fish oil improves the brain function and has a positive
effect on joints and skin. Natural stable fish oil is available in health food shops and
has a neutral taste and should not be confused with cod liver oil which is given to
children. The book is easy to read, contains a large amount of illustrative pictures and
no special previous knowledge is needed. The book contains a glossary and many
