Elderly Woman by the Window

Dedicated to my silent teacher.

She sat
So silently
In her wooden rocking chair
Staring out the window
Without a single care

An elderly woman
Who lived many days
Lived a quiet life
With her own special ways

She sat by the window
Looking out at the sky
Treasuring every moment
As time crawled by

People came to visit
But their voices weren’t heard
She just pointed out the window
Without saying a single word

One day they found her
Dead in the chair
With the window wide open
And the breeze in her hair

They found a letter
Written with her last bit of strength
Describing her happy life
A life of great length

It described the great day
Of the old lady’s birth
It described the children
She brought into this earth

It described a busy life
That let time slip by
It described a promise to herself
Made before she died

She promised she would
Live for the simple things that happen each day
From the moment
Her hair went from brown to gray

She lived out the promise
In her wooden rocking chair
Sitting by the open window
With the breeze in her hair
