"I like to read a murder mystery, to find the killer isn't me.."
Here are some highly recommendable writers:
Colin Dexter; stylish, intelligent stories. No one beats Inspector Morse!! You can visit him at the TV series site (Yes, it is Morse even though the address says Dr. Who)
P.D. James; the literary crime novelist. Catching, deep, thrilling and the poetic sleuth Dagliesh
Ruth Rendell; whether her disturbing psycho thrillers or the more classic Inspector Wexford stories; realistic and with wonderful plots.
Elizabeth George; an American writing English novels. Classy and gruesome (though in some books you have to be overbearing with lengthy English-aristocracy-psycho-analysis)
