Several groups of people have a vested interest in forgeries. Cult weirdos who seek "evidence" for their ideas. Publishers who are out to make money. Exhibitionists who want to become famous by creating a sensation.
These things follow a pattern: A hoax is published and receives a lot of media attention, not because it has any credibility but because the claims are sensational. After a time it is refuted by scholars and disproved by science. Years later, the same hoax is published again -- sometimes just as a reprint, more often in a subtly altered form. The same sensation reappears in the media, because the refutation has been forgotten. And so it goes on.
