Race chronicles

The first and most likely last race at Älvsborg featured a medium speed cirquit with no long straights. The track did not seem to favour any special kind of car. This time Lauda came back with a vengeance and beat Senna to the victory frequency prize. The surprise of the day was Fittipaldi's unability to score fast laps, a treat that has become his trademark.

The superrace was scheduled for 120 laps, but was stopped at 100 due to a bug in the timing program (array dimension, sucker). Favourites Emmo, Lauda and Senna teamed up in the TAG McLaren, but succumbed to the pressure and consistently lost time during the first half of the race. Andretti and Surtees, who up to that point had driven a super-consistent race, then hit electrical trouble - most likely pickup contamination. Much time was lost and there was much hesitation as to whether to bring the car into the pits or not. This time, indecision payed off as the problem mystically cured itself, but not until Senna had briefly taken over the lead for a few laps. The victory margin was 6.76 s.
