Name: Keith Flint
Age: 25
From: Braintree, Essex.
Role: Dancer, Lunatic and singer.
Keith is, at this stage of the Prodigy's career, the most well-known
member of the band. His somewhat unusual appearance, coupled with his antics
in that video, have made Keith every parent's nightmare. One particular
parent, in a letter to the BBC complaining about the Firestarter video,
have called him "a man in need of urgent medical attention".
Keith on stage is a riot altogether. His stage act used to consist
of him inside a giant transparent rubber ball, where he'd have tubes up
his nose to breathe with. Once Maxim would let him out, he would then proceed
to incite a crowd riot, and have a bottle smashed over his head. He has
also suggested setting himself on fire for the live show. As you can imagine,
he has a lot of trouble getting life insurance cover.
Keith Flint is , as he mentioned, the twisted firestarter. The danger illustrated. The bitch you hated. He is not the Prodigy frontman. (These are the ´90s; the Prodigy are not the sort of group that has a frontman.) But since "Firestarter" - the first song that Flint has ever song (or shouted or howled, or whatever you care to call it), after six years of dancing and girning, and cheerleading the Prodigy´s rhytmnoise mayhem - his is the face people think of first. It´s face with a bolt through the nose, which leans onto the left side of his upper lip.
It seems that Keith was destined to be a manic dancer - after all, during his childhood he used to dance in his mum's kitchen to Led Zeppelin. During a series of dead-end jobs, long-haired 'hippy' Keith was often seen dancing at local raves during the 'M25' era of dance music. After having a good time with Leeroy, at a set played by a DJ by the name of Liam Howlett, he decides to get together with Liam, Leeroy and Sharky to form a band.
For the most of his career in the Prodigy, Keith has had long dark hair (up until summer of 1995), although nowadays, he is more famous for his double-mohican hair-style which changes colours almost every week. Before this haircut, though, he did have a phase between the main two (summer - end of 95) where he had a simple short dyed punk haircut.
Name: Liam Howlett
Age: 24
From: Braintree, Essex.
Role: Writer, producer and mixer of The Prodigy trax.
Liam is the main man in the band. He performs most or sometimes all
of the writing, mixing and producing of Prodigy tracks in his home studio
(Earthbound Studios). He is a classically trained pianist and DJ. His history
includes DJ-ing for a hip hop act called "Cut To Kill", which he left after
losing interest in the hip-hop scene (and they had ripped him off). From
this he purchased a keyboard with the intention of making a few songs for
a bit of a laugh. The band's name comes from the first synthesiser Liam
purchased, the MOOG PRODIGY.
(Incidentally MOOG have now gone bust).
Liam is an avid fan of horror films. Many of his tracks contain samples
from films such as "Poltergeist III" (Crazy Man) and "The Shining" (The
Heat The Energy). He has a strange collection of horror film memorabelia
in his house, and even a 3 foot green rat standing up in his sitting room!
(rumor).
Some would say "He IS the Prodigy", but Liam would disagree. Certainly, this guy does write most of the music, and leads the way. But he has stated that the Prodigy would be nothing without the other members.
As a child, Liam began listening to ska and 2-Tone music, before getting into the world of hip-hop, during his teenage years. He was so into hip-hop that he managed to join a local band called 'Cut 2 Kill', but got kicked out later on, after a disasterous record deal and friction with the other members.
After checking out a rave for the first time, Liam started afresh as a rave DJ at The Barn in Braintree. It was there he met Keith and Leeroy, and the rest is history!
Liam lives in Braintree, with his long-term girlfriend Angela, having moved from the nearby village of Cressing a few years ago.
Name: Keeti Palmer
Artist Name: Maxim Reality
Age: 29
From: Peterborough
Role: Master of Ceremonies (MC)
Maxim is the band's voice. He begain MC-ing at the age of 14, when he
used to watch his brother, (MC Starkey) MC-ing on the raggae scene. Since
then, Maxim has developed his own distinct MC-ing style: short snappy lines
directed toward getting the crowd going. It often difficult to interpret
what he is actually saying, since it is mostly encoded in 100+ decibel
screams. Maxim is also planning to release his own hip-hop style album
in late 1996. He says: "It's gonna be like a wu-tang type vibe. Everyone
doing their own thing and then building it up to the main band".
Like Keith, Maxim is a fan of unusual dress and make-up.
The only member of the original line-up to come from a place other than Braintree. Maxim was a member of a reggae outfit ("Maxim Reality and Sheik Yan Groove") shortly before he joined The Prodigy, although he had been into numerous scenes in his native town of Peterborough, such as ska/2-Tone and hip-hop/breakdancing.
The last person to join the Prodigy for their first ever gig, the idea to have an MC was Liam's, having seen most rave outfits doing the same. Maxim was assigned to The Prodigy by former manager Ziggy. During their first gig, Liam wasn't entirely happy with the way Maxim rapped - sure, they got a rapterous reception (previous acts at the venue had been bottled off), but Liam asked Maxim to tone down the reggae-style he was used to.
Maxim's current stage image consists of a pair of 'evil' contact-lenses, a metal armour glove, a dressing gown and even a skirt!
He is currently writing a solo album which he hopes to get out before the end of year, and "some how, Leeroy will be on it".
Name: Leeroy Thornhill
Age: 25
From: Braintree, Essex.
Role: Best dancer you'll ever see.
Leeroy, all 6' 7" of him, is one of the two dancers (the other one is
Keith) of the band. His interest in dancing started at an early age. He
was, and still is, a James Brown fanatic, and spent a lot of time watching
James Brown videos and learning his dance moves. In the days of the underground
rave scene, he was the person to dance with. He was also into the breakdancing
phase that swept the world in the mid eighties, and would regularly equip
himself with a beefy stereo, bottle of Mr. Sheen and a piece of lino and
make his way out into the streets to breakdance with his mates.
Leeroy is also considered a very laid back character. If he complains
about something, then there is a very real problem. He is usually very
quiet (hence the short length of this page), unless there is a female around,
then he really gets talkative.
Electrician/handyman Leeroy spent his spare time at raves in Essex during the early 90s. It was here he met Keith, and the two became known as a little 'double-act', both with unique dancing styles.
He picked up his dancing skills through being a fan of James Brown and similar related acts.
Leeroy, possibly the least known member of the main four, happens to be the most crucial member to the Prodigy's existance, says Liam.
He is a former mod, currently sports long sideburns and a chin-stud and is very tall indeed! He is the only member of the band who likes soccer.
