Historical footnote...

The Existential Inquisition started out with the idea of promoting the inquiry into existence. Short courses on Philosophy were planned, the major schools, their offshoots and ramifications, individual thinkers and "alternative" interpretations (hermetic and occult) were all to be systematised and presented in neatly digestible modules for critical appraisal and the furtherment of knowledge.

Though the original idea remains, much of the practical methodology has been "transmuted" The organization was registered but commitments to prior teaching engagements and a rather extended "sabbatical" resulted in most of the project being shelved.

This site is the concession to conscience and compromise.

The misleading logo...

The logo though undeniably "symbolic" does not imply association with occult or hermetic groups applying similar motifs. If you are familiar with some of the symbols you could probably understand their inter-relationship and what is implied. I f you don't it is of little consequence, we aren't teaching philosophy hidden or otherwise, at the moment.

The name...

What associations would you draw from the name?

Existentialism married to that organ of the faith and of disrepute - The Inquisition. Why existentialism could interest a "philosophical organization", I'll leave to you. The "inquisition" on the other hand was intended to refer to slightly more than just an inquiry, even if it be a rather drawn-out and painful one. The Roman Catholic inquisition of the Middle Ages was, in its conception and infancy, a body for the preservation of the faith though the eradication of falsehood. Looking back, one may observe that both "Truth" and "Heresy" depend largely on the interpretation of the day. Leaving ethics aside, for a moment and omitting dogma and preconceptions, there remains an organization, dauntless and more than a little ruthless in its approach to the nature of existence and our place in the scheme of things.

That desire to eradicate falsehood is worthy of emulation.

In conclusion...

This is the main site of the 'Inquisition but a secondary, less frequently updated one can be found here.

Last but by no means least, I would like to thank OpenCube technologies for developing the excellent applet used on the "Philosophy" page.

The slightly reworked images of the World, the Hierophant and the Hermit, belong to the Rider Tarot deck. (These images may not always be present) Visit Matrix Space and find out more. They are also linked on the "engine" page as: All the answers.
