When Suffocation released their 1990 demo Reincremation, they were quickly signed by Europe's Nuclear Blast Records (for whom they recorded their critically acclaimed Human Waste EP) and Roadrunner Records in the U.S. While their U.S. debut album Effigy Of The Forgotten wasn't released until 1991, European fans instantly embraced the young band as they toured across the continent.
In April of 1992, the band embarked on an extensive tour of Europe and later in the year the made their debut tour in the U.S. After touring the band took an extended 'vacation' and wrote their second full-length masterpiece Breeding The Spawn which was quickly received praise from the Death Metal crowd.
From 1992-1995 several key band changes were made, bassist Josh Barohn was fired (has since joined Autopsy) and replaced with Chris Richards (formerly of Sorrow) and longtime drummer Mike Smith was replaced by Doug Bohn. Suffocation, with their new additions, then went into Morrisound Studios and recorded their third full-length album Pierced From Within which is still gaining momentum in the Death Metal community and is currently one of my favorite albums. Unfortunately Suffocation was dropped from the Roadrunner Records line-up and are currently looking for a new home.
Look for Suffocation to be the next Death Metal band to hit it big, with their heavy, pounding rhythms, wicked riffs, interesting lyrics and Frank Mullen's Chris Barnes-like barks, how can they possibly go wrong?
